Produce donations for the needy

The Davis Garden continues to produce abundantly through the summer when school is out of session.  This year, some teachers kept their garden rows growing into the fall for their students in September to enjoy and some neighbors used the garden to grow their own vegetables.  With the remaining rows, we grew an assortment of veggies for donation.  Most of the food went to Gaining Ground, a nonprofit farm in Concord which distributes produce to multiple local sites and to the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter in Boston.  One of the places Gaining Ground brings the fresh vegetables every week is to our own food pantry in Bedford.

This season we have donated a total of 200 pounds of produce so far!  This includes 127 pounds of potatoes dug by Mrs. Kimball-Dorey's class!!  Here's a picture of my kids (Phineas & Willa) with the potatoes at the Gaining Ground pavilion.  Above them is just one of the many car-loads of kale we donated this season.  Other food donated so far includes lettuce, radishes, beets, summer squash and zucchini.
