Today's Nature Idea-Make Huge Bubbles!

Ingredients

· 6 cups water (distilled is best but tap water is fine)

· 1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent I used “ultra concentrated”, but Dawn original is even better.

· 1/2 cup corn starch

· 1 tbsp baking powder (not baking soda)

· 1 tbsp Glycerine

You will also need a giant bubble wand.

HOMEMADE GIANT BUBBLE RECIPE

1. Dissolve Cornstarch-Dissolve cornstarch in the water, stirring really well.

2. Add Remaining Ingredients-Stir in the rest of the ingredients, being very careful not to create a lot of froth.

3. Let it Sit-Allow your bubble mixture to sit for at least an hour before using, stirring occasionally when you see the cornstarch settling to the bottom.

Note: Some of the cornstarch won’t dissolve completely and may even settle to the bottom when you’re using your bubble mixture, but it won’t affect the quality of your bubbles.

HOW TO MAKE A GIANT BUBBLE WAND:

I used two drinking straws, and a length of yarn that was 6 to 8 times longer than the length of one straw. Thread the yarn through the straws, tie a knot, and you’re good to go!

If you have a place near where you live or even in your own yard or neighborhood where you see and hear birds, this might be a fun activity for you to try! See how many of these birds you can find. You might want to bring along some paper and a pencil and if you have binoculars to see birds up close that would help you identify them!

Build A Stick Maze!

1. Ask your children to draw their own maze. Basic is better.

2. Collect a heap of sticks and branches from around your house.

You could even use grass clippings or leaves!

3. Ask your children to make the maze out of sticks, using the map

they made and the materials you all collected.

Let's explore shadows! All you need is a flashlight and something to shine the flashlight on, like a block or a box or something like that. Then try shining the flashlight above, behind and on either side to see what happens to the shadow of the object you chose. If you want, click on the picture below or make your own shadow observation sheet. Have fun!

Here is another kind of bird feeder or bird house you can make. Use an empty milk carton, paint it and cut out holes with an adult's help so birds can easily get in and out.

Then put some bird seed into the bottom and hang it outside for the birds to enjoy!

Today when you head outside to explore, bring some paper on a clipboard or in a journal. Draw the types of clouds you see and then use the cloud identifier to help you determine what clouds are in the sky.

Garden Tips

Happy spring Davis School kids and teachers! With the weather getting warmer we can soon think about getting out in our garden beds and cleaning them up for some spring planting.

First thing to do when we return to Davis is go outside, find your classroom's garden bed and get it weeded and cleaned up so it's ready to go. Some teachers planted bulbs in the fall that may already be coming up when we return! See you all in the garden!
